The town known as the birthplace of the Lone Star flag takes on even more historical and cultural significance this weekend as it hosts a celebration for things that are old – but haven’t outlived their usefulness.
The 14th annual Montgomery Antiques Festival has been expanded to three days – running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.
to 5 p.m. Sunday.
“We have more than 30 dealers of items that are antiques, repurposed, refurbished, vintage or collectible,” said Shannan Reid, with the Historic
Montgomery Business Association. “We’ve added more time and entertainment to make the event even more fun and interesting.”
Local wineries and craft beer brewers will be on hand, but the biggest addition is the new Junky Funky Prom event, beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Old Icehouse Pavilion. Festival attendees are encouraged to spruce up their old prom outfits with fun accents – like cowboy boots, hats and accessories – as part of the tribute to the vintage event. Entertainment is provided by the
Stephen Sweeten Band.
“We’re modeling the event after the Round Top Antique Fair,” Reid said. “We’re broadening the dealer categories to include a wider range of merchandise and collectibles.”
In past years, the event featured experts to perform antique appraisals for a fee, but this program is no longer available, Reid said. Admission to the
festival is free, but wristbands will be sold for $5 that provide purchasers with discounts at area merchants.
Proceeds from the event benefit area students in the form of scholarships, as well as help revitalize and maintain the historical atmosphere of downtown
Montgomery.
Free parking will be available off Clepper Street at Montgomery Elementary School and behind the Lutheran Church near Texas 149.
