NEWPORT, R.I. -- Federico Santi and John Gacher came in promptly at 8 a.m. to the City Clerk's office to get their marriage license.
They had waited 41 years for this and within a few minutes the documents were signed and the couple were married. They were the first same-sex couple to marry
in Newport today under the new state law.
Santi, 66, and Gacher, 61, met in 1972 and have been together ever since. They own Antiques at The Drawing Room of Newport, a shop on Spring Street. Two years ago, they entered into a civil union, so they were able to marry today without a ceremony.
The couple were happy but they described the event as a little anticlimactic after being together for so long.
"It's just another day," said Santi. "But it's a special
day."
